I am already not buying games because I have GP and know they will come to GP.

If one day, GP is 100M cloud users, 50M console users, don’t you think those cloud users would follow in the steps of TV and music and decide they’d rather just wait for games to hit their $15-$20 monthly sub, vs pay $30-$70 for streamed copies? And that if that became popular, would it not bleed into the console GP user base a bit?

I think he’s doing what many of us have already been thinking about, in that if you do manage to get 50-100M subs on cloud thru phones or smart TVs, are those consumers still going to pay full price for streamed games? I think his points can be taken in multiple ways but which ever way it's taken I think constant evolution of an industry is a good thing.Ĭlick to shrink.I don’t think he’s forgetting that games are still sold outside GP today.

Movies have had that issue as well but there was a bit more diversity behind the scenes since the barrier of entry was lower, but only now has there been a black film renaissance for higher budget films. Most of the AAA games are stories made by white men speaking to white men. Games like Edith Finch or Inside can create stories that don't make the character go from killing groups of enemies in order to progress the story, but the vast majority I think still talks to a perspective of physical violence we can start diversifying from.Īlso we can kind of take this as a slight on the lack of diversity in the video game industry behind the scenes. There are only a hand full a games that don't require physical conflict in some way to progress the story which is something that always made me feel like theres ways the space can progress beyond that. I do semi agree that while there are games that do tell stories in a different way, the vast majority of games do have a similar structure. I think this is largely because gaming is still a really young industry.

More recently, it bought Returnal studio Housemarque and it’s also been rumoured to be purchasing Bluepoint Games as well, the latter of which has almost made nothing but PlayStation exclusives as well."Over time, that leads to a crumbling of the games industry if we just keep talking to the same people and telling the same stories in the same way." Although that’s not to say it has no intention of buying out other studios.īack in 2019, it acquired developer Insomniac Games, which already had a strong relationship with Sony, having created multiple PlayStation exclusives like the original Spyro The Dragon trilogy and the Ratchet & Clank series. And over time, that is going to make the industry moribund, and it’s going to create a world of sameness.’Ĭompared to Microsoft, Sony certainly isn’t as interested in making new acquisitions, preferring to invest in the studios it already owns. But it takes the variety out of the marketplace. ‘Consolidation, from a bank ledger side of the calculation, makes sense,’ he continues, ‘Grab up all the resources so the other guy doesn’t get it and put them to task on the thing that you want to have done.
